First It Was My Dream

Dhan Illiani Yusof is a Malaysian multidisciplinary artist working across mixed media, textile, clothing, performance, installation, conceptual photography and moving image. Emerging from a background in fashion design, her practice centres on the inner life and the structures through which it becomes perceptible: how memory, belief, spirituality, emotion, humour, imagination, contradiction and lived experience acquire material, bodily and visual form, and how these interior conditions continually shape the ways we perceive and encounter the world.
Her work moves through questions of womanhood, faith and cultural inheritance — not as fixed categories of identity, but through their contradictions and overlaps, particularly the ways belief, desire, social expectation and intimacy can coexist within the same person.
Textile and clothing recur most consistently in her practice, alongside photographic and moving image surfaces, built environments, and objects drawn from mixed media. Drawing, writing, image-making, material experimentation and performance frequently develop alongside one another as interconnected parts of the same process through which a work finds its form.
Her practice also extends through collaborative and collective ways of working, including with Tapir Studio, Art × Fashion Malaysia (AX-F), and Projek Rabak, where she has engaged in interdisciplinary and community-based forms of making.
Dhani has exhibited and performed internationally, including at the 59th International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia (2022), Documenta Fifteen (2022), We Are The Flood, Cairo Biennale (2023), a solo exhibition with the National Art Gallery Malaysia (2024), PhotoVogue Festival in Milan, Italy (2026), and State of Fashion Biennale in Arnhem, the Netherlands (2026).
